”Crosstalk” is a term that we borrow from AA.
When someone shares in a twelve-step meeting, it can be perfectly appropriate to share nothing but a supportive smile, a nod, or other gesture of support. Or, you aren’t necessarily not supportive if all you are able to share is your silence or your presence. Empathic silence can be immensely meaningful to those who haven’t been heard. Likewise, after someone shares, words and gestures of support that are kind and engaged may sometimes occur. However these are brief. And if they do not occur, it is never a sign that the group was not listening, or is not engaged. As a participant in a support group, your sharing is encouraged. And. We will never judge you for participating or contributing as a silent witness.
